My daughter and her boyfriend signed for a house this morning...

My daughter has a house....

My daughter ...has...a house...

How the hell does that even happen so fast? I swear she was playing Wendy House and finger-painting my walls only yesterday.
I suddenly feel absolutely ancient and very inadequate, since I have no means to get any furniture into said house for her.
The really good news is that it's not in this town, but in a much newer area about fifteen miles away, near the next main town - and on the bus route.

Excuse me while I go take a fit of the vapors...

She's 17 in a couple of weeks, her bf is 21. I guess they grow up. There was a warning about that on the label -but y'know you don't look at that with newborns ;)It is the same age that I moved out too.
It has been really quick. No warning to prepare myself (or collect things together).They applied to the local housing association a while back - had an interview here last week, and were put on their list. Since bf family circumstances have been strained, and he's been staying with us, he was probably put down as technically homeless (there were questions and according to my lease he shouldn't be here, but I'm not about to throw someone out)- so I suspect they were top of the housing list.
They looked at a horrible, terrible place earlier in the week and said no - then this one came along almost straight after. Nice street, nice little two bed maisonette with garden, but if they wanted it they had to sign within 24hrs (that's standard here because of lack of housing places).
So, yeah - how to get the place furnished without transport or money.
First thing she said - was it's got two bedrooms so you can come and stay sometimes mum. D'aw.
YIKES. I feel so old.

I hear you! I'm still getting over the fact that my daughter is about to get her driving licence...How did that happen!?!

Congrats on your daughter getting a house though (assuming that's a good thing...)...

She's very grown up and organized, so I think it will be good for her to have her own space. It just takes the wind out my sails - she hasn't even taken a driving lesson yet - different priorities I guess. Two more then it'll be empty nest syndrome for me!

Wow! Okay, now I feel old, because I´m 30 and live in my first own flat and don´t have the Intention to buy a house in the near future. Lokks like the Things are handeled different across the ocean, hmm? But, well, I hope your Girl will be lucky with her house and more impotant with her bf.

Oh, okay - it's rented and technically a maisonette - but locally it's still your 'house' (I suppose we use 'house' like home) - though the local language insists they won't be 'living' there, but 'staying' there. (It all confused the heck out of me when I first moved here!)But yeah - 17. I shouldn't be shocked because I rented a house at the same age. Still, baby's gone and grown up.I have to trust her judgement, 'cos she is grown up *crosses fingers*

my daughter finally moved out....again!! her first time was when she was 16 and she's been in and out of our house. now she's moved to vermont!! 2000 miles away!!

yes, they do grow up!!

Well, this one is 20 miles down the road, so hopefully it will be a while before she gets the urge to travel 2,000 miles away -but what an adventure that must be for your daughter. It is what yout is for.

I feel you, mine just started her third year of university. It feels like I just dropped her off for the first year, yesterday. I'm pretty sure the years are picking up speed. :(
As for some of the furnishing, we used a lot of milk crates when we were first living together. They make great book cases and little end tables. Getting your hands on them might be a problem these days but back then they'd give them to you.

Milk crates are not so easy to come by these days. Oh, the supermarket age!
Those years definitely accelerate.

Well, an air mattress and a few milk crates should do to start. Do you have thrift shops and yard sales there? That's the way a lot of new nesters start out. Heck, I still shop those places occasionally, looking for something different (on the cheap). But I know well that "Eep!" feeling when they move out.

She'll be disappearing with my old IKEA futon for a bed at first - and yes, charity shops are fantastic, we already have some curtains that way. A few days in and she has a fridge freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster, lamp shades ... and a cereal dispenser (!) from friends and family.
We've also 'done' freecycle for a while now, so she has some cupboardy and tasbley things, and she's hoping to get a sofa tomorrow, if it hasn't already gone. (Freecycle - the stuff is offered totally free to anyone who will take away promtly and politely.) Gumtree is our Craigslist option, which she has covered too. I'm exhausted just plotting!

My son is 22 now. I have parented with the firm conviction that God has only loaned them to us. Don't tense up, I'm not a fanatic. But it helped me to realize I had a limited period of time and then I HAD TO LET HIM GO. My parents were incapable of giving up their control.

I am so happy for the adventures you and your daughter are going to enjoy.
