Not a free pass, certainly. One would hope he really does understand what is right and wrong. But in my high school teaching career I've seen a few teenaged boys faced with impending fatherhood who would probably have also chosen to make the 'problem' disappear if they'd had the power. Jared has had it modeled for him over and over that 'those people' are beneath him and not deserving of the considerations others of his station would receive. I'd bet Jared's father told him that Sophie got pregnant on purpose in order to trap him into a marriage that would be advantageous only to her. For Jared, that would be one more betrayal from someone he cared for and believed cared for him. I'm still hoping that Jared didn't know she would die.
